Service Considerations
What should you consider when choosing a policy?
- Do you need Personal or Vehicle-based cover? Do you own and drive more than one car?
- Are you self-employed and use a vehicle for work purposes?
- Do you need Single, Joint or Family Cover?
Consider your circumstances and whether you want to cover the vehicle so anyone behind the wheel can still be covered, or yourself as the driver or passenger of any vehicle. If you are living with a partner, then Joint vehicle-based cover might be a good choice, but on the other hand if you both drove and used each others vehicles, individual personal plans might be more beneficial, as you would both be covered for each other. If you have children who are just beginning to learn to drive or have just passed their tests, it may be more beneficial for them to be made named drivers on your policy; this way they can start earning towards NCBs before they actually start driving themselves.
- How old is your vehicle and what condition is it in?
Some providers will take the age of your vehicle, your average annual mileage, your age and the number of years driving experience you have into consideration when they calculate the cost of your policy.
Generally, the younger the driver and the older the car, the higher the risk from the provider's perspective, and therefore your premium will be higher. Usually, young drivers can expect to pay large premiums until they reach the age of 25, after which premiums should begin to reduce after every 5 years, sometimes sooner. If you purchase a newer model of car, your premiums should also fall, as there is a smaller chance of mechanical failure or breakdowns.
- Will you be travelling abroad more than once a year, on business trips or for a holiday?
If you are travelling in your car to and from the continent for business reasons more than once a year, then it would be well worth considering applying for European cover along with any other breakdown plan. If you are taking your car with you on holiday abroad, then there are single trip holiday insurance plans which incorporate European roadside cover which might be more suitable.
- Have you got the best deal on your policy?
You might have found the cheapest deal for breakdown cover from oneprovider, but the best price might not be the best deal for you. Some insurers will offer you discounts on breakdown cover when taken with other products and services such as vehicle insurance which you are required to have for your vehicle(s). Other secondary services such as overseas travel insurance incorporating European and worldwide breakdown cover are often available with roadside recovery.
