'Brits abandon foreign holidays to save money'

People who compare money-saving options may well end up ditching their foreign holidays and spending their summer break in the UK, it has been revealed.

Research by LV= has found 71 per cent of families are concerned about their finances at the moment and as a result 58 per cent have decided to remain in Britain this summer.

The insurance group claims people can make savings of around 38 per cent by abandoning plans to holiday in Greece, Italy and Majorca - and opting for breaks in Blackpool, Scarborough and Bournemouth instead.

Director of tourism at Bournemouth borough council Mark Smith said: "With more and more families choosing to holiday in the UK, Bournemouth's blue flag beaches and miles of golden sand make it a top UK summer destination."

However, a contradictory report released earlier this month by the Air Transport Users Council said Brits were still taking trips abroad and were simply downgrading to cheaper package holidays in order to save money.
