With gas bills set to continue increasing over the next few years, energy customers need to compare money-savings deals and choose their supplier and tariff wisely, according to Moneywise magazine.
News editor Rebecca Atkinson said: "Look at switching your supplier for a cheaper deal, but also consider getting a capped or fixed deal where the cost can only rise to a certain point."
This comes after British Gas announced it was increasing its gas prices by 35 per cent earlier this week.
Research carried out on behalf of Centrica, who own British Gas, revealed as oil prices increase so will the cost of gas.
As a result, the study predicted a rise in gas bills of up to 60 per cent over the next couple of years, with average annual bills increasing from £600 to over £1,000.
The government states 2.5 million households are in fuel poverty, but Energywatch claims the figure is more than four million.
