Brits 'continue to spend on homes and gardens'

Despite loans being harder to come by, a downturn in the mortgage market and rising living costs, people are still willing to spend money on their homes and gardens, according to Legal & General.

Research by the group has found that 42 per cent of people spent up to £1,000 on plants, garden furniture, garden tools or home improvements last month.

Commenting on the findings, Legal & General's director of wealth customer marketing Jonathan Latham said: "It's good to know that despite everything being doom and gloom in the news at the moment, the UK's love of gardens and gardening … is still a priority."

However, he added that it was important that people made an effort to save money and contribute regularly to their pension and savings plans.

Meanwhile, Zurich claim that financial advisers have an important role to play in ensuring people have enough money for a comfortable retirement.
