Reclaiming of bank charges is an ongoing process and it will carry on until everyone has claimed back what they are due, according to needanadvisor.com.

Director Jo Roberts said: "Give it another six months and everybody that is going to claim probably will have."

She added a lot of bank staff were currently involved in working through the claims "because there are literally hundreds" of them.

A survey by uSwitch found the average amount banks were fining their customers was £25.73.

With the average person receiving a total of 8.37 fines, that means people in the UK have typically shelled out £215.36 for bank charges.

More than 18 million people have been faced with a fine from their bank.

A Consumer Action Group survey shows to date more than £18 million has been repaid to 9,824 people.

The bank that has paid back the most is Halifax, followed by HSBC and Lloyds TSB.
