Counting the cost of Saturdays

Britons will spend more than half a million pounds over the course of their lifetime - just on Saturdays, new research has found.

Research conducted for the Co-operative Bank has found that when the weekend comes, Britons are spending an average of £175 each on food, drink, travel, clothes and entertainment.

And this adds up to over £9,000 over the course of each year, the organisation adds.

Product manager at the Co-operative Bank Credit Cards Maxine Xodo said: "It's incredible to think that Saturday spending could add up to so much."

She added that as a nation, Britons work some of the longest hours in Europe and as a result many people live for the weekend.

Therefore, it is important to budget and plan ahead with their spending, so there is no surprise when bills arrive.

The study found that the average consumer spends £25.44 on shoes, £21.59 on clothes and £19.73 on eating out each Saturday.

Last month, the organisation suggested that consumers are spending more money on keeping their children entertained over bank holiday weekends than at any other time of the year.
