Financial information 'should never go in emails'

Consumers should never be convinced to reveal their financial details in an email, an internet security awareness campaign has said.

Tony Neate, managing director of GetSafeOnline.org, suggested that too many people are unaware of the dangers presented by phishing emails.

"Set up your security so that it recognises phishing emails and never answer emails where people ask you for personal or financial information or user name and password," he warned.

Mr Neate also pointed out that banks and other financial institutions have a policy of never asking for user names and passwords through emails, so people should regard any that do as suspicious.

The commentator added that consumers who receive these email should never be tempted to click on links included in them and should immediately delete the messages.

Recent research by MyVoucherCodes.co.uk found that 11 per cent of respondents have been fooled by spam emails that use a financial subject line.
