Holiday market 'remains strong'

Despite the current economic gloom, the holiday market is doing well, according to the Association of British Travel Agents.

Frances Tuke from the organisation said in general "the industry is performing extremely well" for mid-haul and long-haul destinations.

Concerns that eurozone areas would be hit especially hard with the fluctuation in currency also appear to have been unfounded.

Ms Tuke commented: "Spain is holding up very well."

According to a survey of more than 2,000 people by American Express Travellers Cheques, 80 per cent of Brits would be unwilling to give up their summer break.

The ability to compare money saving deals means people can cut costs without cutting out their valued summer get-away altogether, Ms Tuke added.

Figures from the website youtravel revealed a sharp increase in the number of bookings for all-inclusive holidays during March and April.

Meanwhile, a study by Halifax Travel Insurance found 2.5 million Brits take a package holiday to an exotic destination each year and once there spend an average of seven hours away from their hotel.
