Retired married couples have savings and assets worth an average of £269,479 excluding pensions, according to research by Prudential.
The company found that the average sum for a single retiree is £134,739.
For a married couple, £134,145 is typically tied up in equity, over a third is in stocks, shares and cash, while the rest is split between other assets and insurance policies.
Gary Shaughnessy from Prudential stated that although retirees seem to be doing well financially people could be doing more to ensure they are well provided for during their old age.
He said: "The average pensioner could substantially boost their retirement income simply by using their savings and assets in different ways and exploring other options such as equity release to deliver an income."
Going online to compare money saving accounts could be a good step for people wanting to make the most of their finances.
