People can 'cut costs by getting hitched abroad'

Couples may be able to avoid taking out loans or running up huge credit card bills by tying the knot abroad, the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) claims.

Peter Staddon from Biba said some people feel they are being ripped off when they get married in Britain.

He claimed: "Many couples feel they are being taken for a ride in the UK and also that they cannot guarantee good British weather."

Mr Staddon added low-cost flights to exotic overseas destinations were another factor tempting more people to get hitched on foreign shores.

A survey by First Choice Travel Shops and Holiday Hypermarkets revealed 57 per cent of those questioned would consider getting married outside the UK.

The main reason cited was to try and prevent family feuds from spoiling the big day.

An average wedding in the UK costs approximately six times more than it does abroad, the report claims.

Those who get married overseas pay an average of £520, compared to £11,000 in the UK.
