Drivers have to ensure they have sufficient breakdown cover ahead of the winter weather, a price comparison website has suggested.

Moneysupermarket.com pointed out that motorists can take out breakdown cover for as little as £29.50 a year and noted that this will offer them features such as roadside repair and recovery to the nearest garage.

Steve Sweeney, head of car insurance at the website, continued: "Last winter the 'Big Freeze' really took us all by surprise. We don't realise how much we depend on our cars until a problem or breakdown strikes."

He also claimed that the cost of breakdown cover is small in comparison to the peace of mind that it provides when drivers experience problems on the roads in winter weather.

Earlier this month, Legal & General highlighted the home insurance risks which arrive with the winter months and recommended that householders ensure that loft insulation is in a good condition and pipes and water tanks are fully lagged to reduce the risk of accidents.
