Drivers have been reminded of the dangers which emerge on the UK's roads in the winter months, which may show the need for breakdown insurance.

Figures from moneysupermarket.com showed that around one-third of fatal or serious accidents happen in the dark, while almost 4,500 incidents last year occurred in icy or snowy conditions.

The price comparison website claimed that these statistics should remind drivers about the importance of holding breakdown insurance during the winter.

Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at the organisation, said: "While there is no good time to suffer a vehicle breakdown it is especially worrying at this time of year with nights drawing in earlier and temperatures dropping."

He also recommended that motorists put their vehicles through regular checks to prevent them from suffering a breakdown and pointed out the importance of carrying equipment such as jump leads, high-visibility jackets, first aid kits and torches.

Last week, esure claimed that 67 per cent of driver do not have breakdown insurance and would be forced to rely on themselves, friends or family to rescue them if their car failed.
