Breakdown cover is essential with the dark, winter nights...

With the dark nights rolling in and the clocks going back on October 30th, car insurance customers have been advised to have adequate cover in place in case their vehicle breaks down in the evening.

Moneysupermarket.com noted that this type of protection can cost as little as £30 per year, but can provide motorists with extra peace of mind.

Pete Harrison, car insurance spokesman at the website, noted: "Being stranded at the side of the road in the dark can be a very distressing experience and having adequate breakdown cover can give you the peace of mind that help is only a phone call away."

He added that Department for Transport statistics revealed that the majority of road incidents during the winter months took place between 15:00 and 17:00GMT – the school run.

Recently, the Institute of the Motor Industry advised Brits to make sure their vehicles are well maintained with harsh winter weather being forecast for the UK in the coming months.
