Breakdown cover 'stops risky rescues'

Taking out breakdown cover can ensure that drivers do not put themselves or others in danger, it has been suggested.
Research from esure found that 67 per cent of motorists do not have breakdown insurance and would not be able to rely on professionals to help them if their car failed on the roads.
In addition, 54 per cent of these would call friends or family to rescue them in the event of a breakdown, while 13 per cent attempt to fix their vehicle on the hard shoulder.
However, the group pointed out that both of these strategies are risky, as people should not be on the hard shoulder without safety equipment such as hi-visibility clothing and specialist hazard lighting.
Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure, said: "Breakdown cover is a very small price to pay for a service that can protect a motorist and their family when they are at their most vulnerable."
A recent poll of 3,548 motorists under 25 by The Co-operative Insurance and road safety charity Brake found that 30 per cent admit to driving dangerously.
