Breakdown cover 'vital in winter weather'

Drivers should ensure that they have adequate breakdown cover to protect them during the freezing weather, it has been recommended.
Will Thomas, head of motoring at Confused.com, said that many people may think that breakdown cover is a luxury in the current economic climate, but the recent snow should demonstrate its importance.
The expert pointed out that people whose vehicles fail because of the weather could face a long time stood in the cold waiting for friends or family to rescue them as well as an expensive repair bill, which could be avoided it they are covered.
"On top of this you need to take into account the associated benefits that a breakdown policy would offer - overnight stay, alternative travel, car hire cover, things you would not necessarily think about until you were in an emergency situation," he added.
Mr Thomas also noted that there are many forms of breakdown cover on the market and recommended that drivers shop around to find the best deal for their needs.
Recently, the Institute of Advanced Motorists reminded drivers of the need to be especially careful in snowy and icy conditions, recommending they plan their journeys as thoroughly as possible.
