Theft is not the biggest problem facing boat insurance holders, it has been claimed.
Research from Saga Boat Insurance revealed that the most popular problem is owners hitting a submerged object, accounting for 19 per cent of claims and paying out an average of £2,394.55.
In addition, the organisation explained that 15 per cent of claims are concerned with theft, with the average being for £1,218.
However, Saga recommended that boat owners still protect their vessel against thieves, advising them to avoid leaving valuable navigational equipment, wet weather gear and personal items unattended.
The group also said that quality locks or chains should be used to secure outboard motors, tenders and life rafts, while unfastened equipment such as anchors and oars need to be protected.
According to Saga's figures, other common claims on boat insurance include collision while cruising, storm damage while moored and accidental damage when moored.
Recent research from the organisation found that 46 per cent of motorists aged over 50 find driving to be a pleasurable activity.
