The over 50s are increasingly becoming interested in motorcycling, it has been claimed, which could interest those seeking breakdown cover.

Research carried out by Saga Insurance found that 21 per cent of all motorcyclists, or almost 700,000 people, are over the age of 50.

In addition, a further one million people in this age group want to own a motorbike.

The survey also found that 84 per cent of older bikers enjoy the pastime because of the freedom provided by the open road, while 23 per cent say it is a cheaper alternative to owning a car.

It also showed that 17 per cent use it as an easy way to commute to work, with 16 per cent reporting that they enjoy the risks created by riding a motorbike.

Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman of Saga Group, said: "With more over 50s than ever before taking to the road, it is a great indication that this age group is really embracing the idea of living life to the full."

Recent research from Tescocompare.com found that one-third of people who own more than one car are considering selling a vehicle to reduce their outgoings.
