'Preparation needed' for winter driving

Motorists should ensure that they are adequately prepared when taking to the road in severe weather conditions, breakdown insurance customers have been told.
Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said that comprehensive breakdown cover is vital for drivers in times of snowy and icy weather.
The expert also pointed out that drivers should make regular maintenance checks on their vehicles to avoid them breaking down in the first place.
"Taking regular precautionary measures such as checking the oil level, anti-freeze, hazard lights and tyres for tread depth and pressure, and stowing a spare tyre in the boot of your car are a good idea," he explained.
Furthermore, Mr Sweeney recommended that drivers keep an emergency kit containing a torch, high-visibility jacket, reflective triangle sign, jump leads and first aid supplies in their car.
He added that drivers should practice safe driving techniques in snow, such as keeping an adequate distance from the vehicle in front and not accelerating suddenly.
Will Thomas, head of motoring at Confused.com, said that the recent snow shows that breakdown cover should not be considered a luxury.
