Quarter of breakdown policies 'not valid for misfuelling'

Almost one-quarter of breakdown insurance policies do not cover their holders against misfuelling, it has been found.

Analysis of 288 motor breakdown policies by independent financial research firm Defaqto discovered that 23 per cent do not pay out if drivers accidently fill their vehicle with the wrong type of fuel.

Mike Powell, insight analyst for general insurance at Defaqto, added: "Even those motor breakdown policies that do cover such an eventuality will tend to find that the extent of the coverage is limited to towing the car to a garage or to their destination."

The research also showed that 14 per cent of breakdown insurance policies do not cover motorists if they run out of fuel when on the roads.

Mr Powell recommended that drivers are aware that there is a wide variation in the features offered by different breakdown insurance products.

Earlier this month, Defaqto research found that 94 per cent of car insurance policies do not offer drivers any cover for road rage incidents.
