'Roadside roulette' costs drivers £120 million

Drivers who gambled over the last year that they would not need breakdown cover ended up losing £120 million during the 12-month period, it has been revealed.

Research carried out by the AA indicates two million people broke down without any form of insurance last year, with many paying more than three times the price of basic cover for emergency assistance.

AA patrol of the year Andy Taylor said: "It might seem tempting to save a few quid now and gamble that your car will carry you through the downturn without crunching to a halt - but driving without breakdown cover is like roadside roulette."

He went on to say battery, key and tyre problems are responsible for a third of all breakdowns and can strike at any time, regardless of the age or type of car and driving without cover "is just not worth the risk".

This week, price comparison website moneysupermarket.com suggested motorists in East Sussex are most likely to make insurance claims for car theft.
