Investing in additional security measures to protect vehicles and property may not necessarily bring down car insurance and home insurance premiums, according to Tescocompare.com.
Research by the group has revealed homeowners who add an alarm to their property make an average annual saving of £5.
Meanwhile, installing a car alarm typically translates into a £1.70 reduction in yearly car insurance premiums.
Paul Baxter, director of commercial and partnerships at Tescocompare.com said buying an alarm for a house or car may well offer someone "peace of mind".
However, he added: "If you are planning on saving money on your insurance premiums you should make sure you check your options first."
Mr Baxter stated people should compare insurance quotes to ensure they were aware of the full range of options available to them.
Earlier research by Tescocompare.com found that children and teenagers are responsible for 1.1 million accidents in the home every year.
