Some claim where there is muck there is brass but bird muck is proving costly for British motorists, according to new research.
A study by Zurich Insurance has revealed repairing damage caused by bird droppings is costing drivers in the UK nearly £57 million every year.
Some 89 per cent of motorists say their cars have been hit in the past year.
And droppings can be more than just an eyesore, with two-fifths of motorists whose cars have been hit reporting permanent damage.
Removing the bird droppings can also cause damage, with 13 per cent of those whose vehicles have been affected stating they have scratched the paintwork when attempting to clean their cars.
Mike Quinton from Zurich Insurance said: "Unfortunately, very few birds have insurance to claim from, and your own insurance is unlikely to cover it."
He added the best way to deal with bird droppings was to "act quickly and remove the offending item as soon as possible".
In related news, research from Britannica Rescue/LV= has revealed a ten per cent rise in the number of motorists breaking down after running out of fuel over the past three months.
