Car insurance customers get nine cars in their lifetime

Car insurance customers will change their car nine times during their lifetime, but the recession could reduce this number, new research finds.

The findings from Tesco show that two-thirds of these vehicles are bought before the age of 40, with a quarter switching their car simply because they want something better.

However, the recession could alter this, as 29 per cent of car insurance customers say they do not plan to change their vehicle in the next 12 months and almost a quarter saying they may sell their run around to create some extra cash.

Debra Williams, from TescoCompare, said people should take the same approach to their car insurance as they have their car, adding that people stick to what they know and end up paying over the odds on their premiums.

She added: "Even when the make and model of the car doesn't change from year to year, driving experience, age and personal circumstances do, all of which could have an impact on the cost of car insurance."

People may find more companies are opting for pay-as-you-drive car insurance schemes as they look to reduce the cost of their policy.
