Motorists who try to save money by not paying for car insurance are taking a serious risk, according to Rias.

The insurer states, aside from the fact it is illegal and drivers could end up with a criminal record, getting behind the wheel without insurance costs law-abiding motorists £500 million a year or the equivalent of £30 extra on every premium.

Rias managing director Janet Connor said: "There is no question that driving without insurance is both unlawful and ill-advised."

Last year, about 160 people were killed after being involved in accidents with uninsured drivers and a further 23,000 people were injured.

During 2007, more than 150,000 uninsured vehicles were seized by police, equivalent to one every three minutes.

Rias claims technology that aids number plate recognition and better communication between police and insurance companies is helping to combat the problem.

Meanwhile, TV presenter Anne Robinson may find her car insurance premiums rise in the future after she received a six-month ban for speeding.
