Car insurance mistakes 'cause police stops'

People who have made small mistake on their car insurance applications are increasingly being stopped by the police, it has been claimed.

The AA explained that errors, such as using an 'O' rather than an '0' or transposing letters or numbers, can cause automatic number plate recognition technology to not recognise vehicle's as being insured.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said he is organisation has seen phone calls concerning police stops for these mistakes increase from one or two a month to more than 20 a week.

"I see this as encouraging because it also means that police are becoming increasingly successful at catching genuine uninsured drivers as well as people who've made simple mistakes," he added.

Mr Douglas also recommended that people take extra care when filling out their car insurance applications and advised to check all their details are correct when they receive their confirmation documents, in order to avoid the problem.

Recently, a poll by Direct Line found that 69 per cent of motorists would support increased penalties for those caught on their mobiles when driving.
