One-fifth of drivers will not perform any checks on their vehicles before setting off on their holidays this summer, which may concern car insurance customers.

Research carried out by Kwik-Fit found that around four million of the 20 million people who plan to embark on a UK-based break will not ensure their vehicles are safe.

The poll showed that 63 per cent of motorists do not check their spare tyre is in working order before starting a driving holiday, while 62 per cent fail to check their brake fluid.

In addition, 55 per cent will not bother to look at their coolant level, 48 per cent will neglect to look at their tyre tread depth and 26 per cent will fail to top up their screen wash.

Ian Fraser, chief executive at Kwik-Fit, commented: "The summer months can be a demanding time for cars, often fully-laden and expected to travel long distances."

Recent research by Confused.com found that 38 per cent of motorists have lied to car insurance providers in a bid to gain cheaper premiums.
