City dwellers 'need car insurance too'

Motorists should not neglect car insurance because it is more expensive in cities than rural areas, an expert has suggested.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Association, said people in large cities such as London and Birmingham could be put off car insurance by its high cost when compared to places such as Wales.

However, he explained: "There's more crime, there's more traffic and there's more junctions, where incidents occur, and so it is more expensive there."

Mr Trudgill recommended that motorist visit a broker in order to find a car insurance deal with suits their budget, while some may offer an instalment payment plan.

According to Direct Line, there are around 1.5 million uninsured drivers on UK roads, with these motorists killing approximately 200 road users every year.

In addition, uninsured drivers are ten times more likely to have been convicted of drink driving and six times more likely to be behind the wheel of an unsafe vehicle.
