Drivers 'losing car crime worries'

A new poll has found that drivers are becoming complacent about vehicle crime, which could lead to car insurance problems.

Research by Admiral discovered that 76 per cent of motorists are worried about their car being stolen, falling from 80 per cent concerned by this in 2008.

However, the survey also showed that more people are neglecting security, with 73 per cent leaving personal items on display in their unattended vehicle - rising from 71 per cent last year.

Coats and jackets were found to be the items most commonly left in unattended cars, while CDs, handbags and mp3 players are frequently left on display.

Sue Longthorn, Admiral managing director, said: "It's a worrying trend that more motorists are happy to leave expensive items on show in their cars. It only takes seconds for an opportunistic car thief to break a car window and grab what's inside."

Recently, Virgin Money Car Insurance reminded drivers to be careful not to leave their Christmas shopping unattended in their vehicles when picked up presents for loved ones in December.
