Drivers 'need to shop around for car insurance'

Most drivers who shop around for a better car insurance deal are able to save money, a new study has suggested.

Research published by Which? discovered that 60 per cent of motorists who decided to look for a new policy rather than renew their existing cover found a cheaper deal and saved an average of £58.

The survey also found that 30 per cent of motorists who accepted the renewal quote from their car insurance provider did so because they did not want to go through the effort of shopping around.

Peter Vicary-Smith, chief executive of Which?, commented: "Renewing your car insurance with your existing provider may be convenient, but our experts have found that this is one area where loyalty doesn't pay."

He added that many providers will match a quote that a driver has found from shopping around, making this a good way of obtaining cheaper cover and remaining on the same policy.

Earlier this month, Defaqto revealed that 28 per cent of car insurance policies do not offer any form of uninsured loss recovery to their holders.
