Drivers 'risking safety in winter'

A worrying number of drivers are risking their safety by taking to the roads without checking weather conditions first.

Research carried out by Sainsbury's Car Insurance found that 33 per cent of motorists do not look at weather forecasts before setting off on their journeys, the equivalent to almost 11.4 million people.

In addition, 27 per cent, or around 9.5 million drivers, neglect to clear frost or mist from their windscreens.

Ben Tyte, Sainsbury's Car Insurance manager, commented: "If [drivers] start to become complacent and think the worst weather is behind them, they could increase their chances of having an accident in the coming days and weeks."

The organisation recommended that drivers take simple precautions before starting a journey, including checking their oil, water and brake fluid levels, battery and tyre condition.

Last week, Vauxhall reminded motorists of the importance of having their vehicles serviced to ensure the cold spell has not damaged them.
