Executive vehicle and 4x4 drivers a higher risk of theft

Car insurance customers with 4x4 vehicles are at a higher risk of being a victim of car theft than many other drivers, an organisation has warned.

Vehicle valuation firm HPI said that these cars and compact executive-style vehicles are most commonly being stolen, while age is also a factor in theft risk.

The organisation claimed that car insurance customers with cars between four and eight-years-old may find themselves at higher risk, as these vehicles account for 45 per cent of all vehicles stolen.

While 4x4s and compact executive-style vehicles are at a high risk, the organisation also stated that "roadsters and small family cars follow close behind, both at eight per cent, suggesting it's not just the prestige fast cars, but the everyday smaller vehicles that are bringing criminals financial gain".

The research follows advice from the AA that car insurance customers are being increasingly stopped by police due to small mistakes, such as number plates being misread.
