Fiat tops low-emission table

Drivers of Fiat cars can pay less for car insurance as their CO2 emissions are under 140 g/km, according to research by Clean Green Cars.

A decade after manufacturers set themselves this target, only Fiat and Mini actually achieved it, new data has revealed.

Some car insurance companies have launched eco-friendly policies to appeal to environmentally-conscious drivers. These can include contributing a percentage of policies sold to projects in renewable energy, education in third world countries and reforestation.

According to a report on MSN Money, some insurance companies only employ the services of garages that use only recycled materials as part of a marketing ploy to appeal to customers who care about the environment.

Drivers of electric, alternative fuel and hybrid vehicles are also often offered extra discounts on their policies. Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers show 6,538 hybrid vehicles were bought over 2006 and 2007 while sales of sports cars went down by 12 per cent.
