Fight to tackle lack of car insurance

The Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) says it and the government is set to tackle those who drive without car insurance, as many of the offenders do not see it as a crime.

Lorraine Preston, communications assistant at the MIB, said the authorities have a range of methods to fight motorists who "don't see uninsured driving for the crime that it is".

She added: "The police and the Motor Insurers' Bureau, along with government, are determined to change both the perceptions and behaviour of the uninsured, into those of honest motorists."

Ms Preston revealed that the police have access to data which reveals the UK's hotspots for uninsured driving, while Automatic Number Plate Recognition can also be used to identify offenders.

Furthermore, a timetable for the introduction of Continuous Insurance Enforcement, which is the government and industry's next step in fighting the problem, will be announced.

According to figures from the MIB, there could be up to two million uninsured vehicles on Britain's roads, with the worst offending region being Barkerend in Bradford.
