Firms 'should ensure workers' cars are covered'

Employees could be driving without cover if they are using their own vehicle as part of their job, it has been pointed out.

A poll conducted by price comparison site Gocompare.com discovered that 72 per cent of employees have used their own vehicle at work, but 35 per cent lack business use cover on their car insurance policy.

The research also found that most common business journeys undertaken in a private car are travelling to a training course, driving to the bank, going to the post office and visiting another office.

Lee Griffin, business development director of Gocompare.com, said: "More flexible working habits and multi-location workplaces mean that many workers now use their own vehicles for informal or ad-hoc company business."

However, he pointed out that employers have a responsibility to make sure that any vehicles used for business purposes are safe, regardless of who owns them.

Recent research from the Institute of Advanced Motorists found that drivers aged over 70 are less likely to be involved in a road accident than those in their teens and 20s.
