Vehicle thieves will take just about anything, according to car insurance group Admiral.

Over the last 12 months, motorists have claimed for a range of unusual items including dog food, celery and a cat flap.

Admiral has examined more than 8,000 car insurance claims to compile a list of the most unusual items that have been stolen.

Managing director Sue Longthorn said: "We discovered some very strange things. Quite why someone would leave some of these things in their car or want to claim for them is a mystery."

Other unusual personal effects stolen include leather shorts, a six foot Power Ranger costume and some sandwiches.

To help avoid becoming a victim of car crime, Admiral states motorists should use a steering wheel lock, hide any items in an unattended car and remove any satnav suction marks from the windscreen.

Earlier this week, research from Direct Line revealed almost 1.5 million women in the UK had deliberately damaged a car.
