Insurance providers 'discriminate against over-80s'

A new report has claimed that insurance providers deny quotes to drivers aged over 80.

The study, which was published by Age Concern and Help the Aged, found that half of car insurance firms and one-third of travel insurers routinely deny quotes to older people, regardless of the condition of their health.

In addition, the report suggested that age discrimination in the insurance industry is causing real problems in people's lives, such as preventing them visiting their friends and family or taking holidays overseas.

Andrew Harrop, head of public policy at Age Concern and Help the Aged, commented: "The insurance industry must wake up to the fact that more of us than ever are living longer, healthier and more active lives."

He also said that the recent decision of the Government Equalities Office to allow the insurance industry to continue using age limits is "profoundly unjust".

This week, price comparison website Confused.com revealed that having just two road accidents could double the price of car insurance.
