Kids 'cause tension during long car rides'

Some 34 per cent of parents claim they feel anxious before embarking on car journeys with their children, according to car insurance company Admiral.

Research by the group has revealed that a further two per cent state the behaviour of the children in the backseat has almost caused an accident.

About 73 per cent of adults said kids complaining of being bored was the worst aspect of long car trips, 36 per cent claimed regular trips to the loo were the biggest cause of tension and 30 per cent admitted to being stressed out by arguments occurring.

Claire Halset, clinical psychologist and parenting expert, said there are a number of measures parents can take to make car journeys more enjoyable.

She stated: "Increase the chance of a peaceful ride by organising plenty to entertain, schedule lots of breaks in the journey and agree a clear set of rules and rewards for good behaviour."
