Losing a job 'can lead to car insurance rise'

There are many contributing factors to the cost of a car insurance policy, but not having a job is one that people may not be aware of.

That is the opinion of insurance expert Ian Crowder, a spokesperson for the AA, who responded to one reader's letter in the Scotsman.

According to the reader, he was recently made redundant and found that the cost of his car insurance soared because he did not have a job - something Mr Crowder said is the case with many insurers.

He advised the reader to look around for the best deal, as some companies do not boost premiums even if the customer does not have a job.

"Their reasoning behind premium increases is that unemployed people are more likely to make a claim for an accident," the expert said.

Recently, a poll carried out by M&S Car Insurance discovered that 56 per cent of British motorists have been the victim of car crime at some point.
