Modifying your car 'could lead to increased insurance premiums'

People planning to make modifications to their vehicles need to be aware of the associated laws and regulations, according to Direct Line Car Insurance.
Jennifer Culley from the group said changes which increase a car's "performance, value or desirability to a thief, will also attract increased premiums".
She pointed out this is because these kind of modifications will also raise the "risk, value or likelihood of a claim".
In contrast, Ms Culley stated the majority of insurers would not increase premiums for those who make modifications which make their vehicles safer or at less risk of damage and theft.
Those determined to make modifications to their vehicles should get in touch with a professional as "there can be implications that an amateur may not consider", she added.
In May 2007, bull bars became illegal under EU law in a bid to cut the number of road deaths.
Last month, a law was passed in Peoria, Illinois, that meant the police could fine drivers of vehicles with tinted windows as well as companies carrying out this kind of work.
