Motorists confess to risky driving behaviour

More than half of drivers routinely behave irresponsibly when behind the wheel, a new survey has found.

A poll carried out by Co-operative Insurance showed that 54 per cent of motorists confess to irresponsible driving choices that could put other road users at risk, which may concern car insurance customers.

The research also revealed that 53 per cent of respondents admit eating and drinking when behind the wheel, while 12 per cent routinely smoke when in control of their vehicle.

Furthermore, 11 per cent prepare for meetings while driving, seven per cent talk on their mobile phones and six per cent put on makeup or get dressed.

Grant Mitchell, function leader at Co-operative Insurance, commented: "Driving a car is likely to be the most hazardous thing we will do each day and yet these alarming figures show over 50 per cent of drivers are unnecessarily increasing the chances of causing or being involved in an accident."

Earlier this month, a Post Office survey found that some motorcyclists are driving illegally, with 40 per cent of those with a provisional licence carrying a passenger on their bike despite this being prohibited.
