Motorists 'not familiar with new cars'

Many drivers who have just bought a new car will hit the road without taking time to properly learn how the vehicle works, a survey has found.

A poll carried out by M&S Car Insurance showed that just 12 per cent of motorists will fully read the manual of their new vehicle before they take it out for a spin for the first time.

David Wells, M&S head of insurance, commented: "To avoid taking risks and potentially causing an accident, it is important to take time to familiarise yourself with the features of a car that's new to you."

The research also showed that the most common problems drivers have with a new vehicle is locating the handle which opens the bonnet, using the CD player or radio, adjusting the seat position, finding the headlights switch and using the windscreen wipers.

A recent report from the AA found that simple errors on car insurance applications, such as transposing letters or numbers, is leading to more drivers being stopped by the police.
