Motorists warned to check their level of cover before heading abroad
By Tom Farley, Wed 2 Jul 2008 - Published in Car Insurance
People planning to take vehicles with them on holiday abroad this summer need to check their car insurance policies thoroughly, according to the AA.
Ian Crowder from the motoring group warned that some comprehensive policies only provide third-party cover when motorists venture onto the continent.
He commented: "I think a lot of people have been unwittingly misled into thinking their comprehensive insurance will also be comprehensive in the countries that they visit."
Research from Sainsbury's Car Insurance has revealed that 17 per cent of people in the UK intend taking their cars abroad in the next year.
Almost half of those people say they expect to be driving in excess of a thousand miles while on foreign soil.
Approximately 19 per cent predict they will drive between 501 and 1,000 miles and 29 per cent say they will be driving under-500 miles.
Sainbury's warns unless people inform their insurer before going they could find they do not have the level of cover they expect.
