No "magic solutions" exist for green cars ... yet

At the moment there are no "magic solutions" for people who want to drive completely eco-friendly cars, according to an expert in the sector.

While many manufacturers offer eco sub-brands - such as the Volkswagen Bluemotion model and the Ford Kinetic - there is no suitable technology or market yet for totally electric vehicles, said Jay Nagley, publisher of Clean Green Cars.

He said the next generation of plug-in hybrids are likely to enter the market from 2010, representing the next "significant" improvement in the industry.

But for electric cars, Mr Nagley added, "the technology just isn't ready yet ... there is no market".

However, he gave some advice to those who want to reduce their carbon footprint, suggesting that they look at what car they want to buy and then find out which one in that class has the lowest fuel consumption.

"It's just a question of seeing which version of a given car is the best," the publisher concluded.

News such as this might also be useful for drivers looking to lower their car insurance costs. Some insurers offer discounts or lower prices for motorists with eco-friendly vehicles.
