One-tenth of parents admit to fronting

Parents are breaking the law by 'fronting' their child's car insurance, new research has claimed.

A survey by moneysupermarket.com found that one in ten parents have insured their child's car in their own name in order to benefit from cheaper car insurance, while another 30 per cent would consider committing the offence.

Furthermore, there appears to be some confusion over whether fronting is legal or not, as 26 per cent think it is not against the law and 31 per cent do not know.

Steve Sweeney, head of car insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: "It is staggering to see just how many people are happy to take the risk and 'front' on their car insurance; it is illegal and will immediately be classified as fraud by an insurer."

Drivers in London and the north-west were found to be the ones most likely to front their car insurance, while women commit the offence more than men.

Last month, online insurer swiftcover.com revealed that most drivers it contacted about fronting claimed it was an honest mistake, but cancelled their policy rather than pay a more expensive premium.
