One-third would fail driving test

Research from a price comparison service claims a third of UK motorists would fail their driving test if made to re-sit it.

The findings, from Confused.com, suggests almost 12 million people think they would not pass a retake of their driving test, with 35 to 45-year-olds having the least confidence.

In addition, the poll examined bad habits which could lead to points on licenses and increasing insurance premiums, finding 47.2 per cent of motorists drive with one hand on the wheel.

Furthermore, 28.5 per cent admit to breaking the speed limit on a regular basis, 20.2 per cent eat or drink while in control of a vehicle and 8.7 per cent neglect to indicate when turning.

Will Thomas, head of motor insurance at the website, said drivers can easily pick up bad habits and it is worth attempting to remedy these.

He added: "Reckless driving can be extremely costly for motorists, not least in terms of car insurance premiums which rocket as drivers rack up points."

Recently, Lorraine Preston, communications assistant at the Motor Insurers' Bureau, said the organisation and the government plan to launch new initiatives to tackle those who drive without car insurance.
