Pothole claims rise in 2010

Car insurance claims for damage caused by potholes have spiked in the opening weeks of 2010, it has been revealed.
AA Insurance reported that there has been a four-fold rise in pothole claims during the first month of the year, when compared to figures from 2009.
Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, pointed out that many of these applications could be unnecessary, as the loss of a no-claims bonus and the excess often have a higher cost than the price of a repair.
"It would take a quarry-like pothole to cause the sort of damage that would justify an insurance claim, but there are certainly some A-list' holes out there," he commented.
The AA also called on the government to increase funding for road repairs, in a bid to fix the potholes which were caused by the recent cold spell.
Last month, the Institute of Advanced Motorists said drivers should get into the habit of checking their tyres after hitting a pothole.
