Pothole damage 'becoming more common'

The UK's pothole problem is causing costs to rise for car insurance providers, it has been claimed.

Figures published by the AA show the number of claims linked to potholes has risen by more than 600 per cent over the last three years, with the problem becoming increasingly pronounced in the recent weeks.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, explained: "Nationally, the damage to cars caused by potholes in February alone cost insurers around £2.85 million - the equivalent of about 1,900 claims."

However, he said that this is "just the tip of the iceberg", as many incidences of pothole damage are too small for drivers to consider putting in a car insurance claim for.

The AA also said that the UK could have up to two million potholes in its roads, creating a £140 million repair bill.

Earlier this year, the Institute of Advanced Motorists pointed out that potholes often become more common when conditions warm, as this causes more cracks and damage to roads.
