Potholes 'causing car insurance claim rise'

Motorists need to be aware of the risks of potholes in the UK's roads, which can lead to accidents and car insurance claims, a specialist has pointed out.
Mark Monteiro, insurance expert at uSwitch.com, said the freezing weather which is striking Britain is leading to a sudden deterioration of road surfaces.
He explained that the jump in the number of potholes has led to damage caused by them to increase by a third.
The expert also said that the number of car insurance claims for pothole damage is likely to rapidly increase as roads remain in a bad state of repair for some time to come.
"Potholes are a major cause of axle and suspension failure, which account for a third of all mechanical issues on UK roads and cost British motorists an estimated £2.8 billion in repairs every year," Mr Monteiro added.
This week, road maintenance campaign website Potholes.co.uk warned drivers to be especially watchful for potholes that are hard to spot because they are full of water.
