Two road accidents 'double car insurance cost'

Having just two road accidents could cause the price of car insurance to double, new figures have shown.

A study from price comparison website Confused.com examined hundreds of motor insurance quotes before any accidents then after two had been reported and found that some increased by more than 200 per cent.

Will Thomas, head of motor at the organisation, added: "When you consider the average premium in 2009 was £400 that's a lot of money to lose and let's face it, there are far better things you could be spending it on."

He also pointed out that car insurance premiums are expected to rise in 2010 regardless of accidents and recommended that people shop around for better deals rather than automatically renewing their current policy.

Price comparison service Moneysupermarket.com recently found that the average price of car insurance is £545.86, but this rises to £623.15 for drivers with three penalty points on their driving licence.
