Abbey Credit Cards gives money-saving holiday tips

Visiting a museum and drawing pictures on the driveway are just two ways parents can entertain children for free during the summer break, according to Abbey Credit Cards.

Recent research by the bank shows this year parents will spend a collective £4.2 billion on holidays, compared with £2.8 billion in 2007. Per family this is an average cut from £749 to £576 for this summer.

More is being spent on taking kids out for a meal and on day trips show but parents have cut down on buying new toys, DVDs and computer games and sports equipment.

Other suggestions by Abbey for a cheaper holiday are flying a homemade kite, using fairy liquid to make bubbles and making some spaghetti.

Parents who are taking their families abroad are urged to use their Abbey credit card to avoid being charged fees.
Callum Gibson, head of Abbey Credit Cards, said: "With Abbey's Zero card you pay no fees for foreign exchange or cash advances, meaning your holiday budget is spent on the right thing."

American Express Travellers Cheques is advising holidaymakers to think carefully about their cash and cheque content on a break, particularly as more are taking two-week trips.
